Foundation Board Presents 2007 Elderberry Awards

Elderberry Award – Nutrition Providers Council of Boulder County

An Elderberry Award was presented to the Nutrition Providers Council of Boulder County, which is comprised of meal, grocery, nutrition, and nutrition education providers for older adults in Boulder County.  ASF chose to recognize them because their collaborative efforts have made a significant impact on aging well in Boulder County. Past collaborations include the “Let’s Eat” directory and the annual Mayors for Meals Campaign.  In 2007, their collaborative campaign, “Emergency Readiness for Older Adults”, provided ready-to-eat meals to over 300 vulnerable older adults in Boulder County.  This project gained the recognition of the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, and the Office of Emergency Management in Boulder.

Elderberry Award – Society for Creative Aging

Society for Creative Aging has been fostering innovative approaches to stimulating creativity for elders and increasing the awareness of the relevance of art and aging in Boulder County since 2002.  Since its inception, SCA has provided bilingual workshops, movement performances, creative writing workshops, and artist trainings.  Their recent collaboration with the Children, Youth and Environments (CYE) Center at CU and the Horizons K-8 Alternative School has resulted in an intergenerational mural project.  This project has engaged children and older adults in a discussion of creating livable and vibrant communities for all ages.

Elderberry Award – Circle of Care

Circle of Care was selected for an Elderberry Award because it contributes to the social and civic engagement of older adults, reduces isolation, and contributes to mental well-being. Circle of Care helps create a vibrant community in which all age well.

Circle of Care is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to the arts, cultural, educational, and social opportunities for older adults in Boulder County.

Elderberry Award – Caring Allenspark (CAP)

Caring Allenspark received an Elderberry Award because through their efforts, CAP has succeeded in encouraging intergenerational interaction in a variety of settings. CAP has amassed a volunteer pool to help seniors with meals, household tasks, and transportation to meetings, social functions, and doctor’s appointments. CAP continues to strive to identify the needs of community members and find volunteers who are able to assist them. CAP is dedicated to serving the community and has had a positive impact on the seniors and people of all ages in the Allenspark area in the short time they have been in existence. This dedication to service is certainly making Allenspark a vibrant community in which all community members will age well.

Why the Elderberry?

The elderberry is the fruit of the elder, a native shrub belonging to the honeysuckle family. Called the "Tree of Music" by Native Americans, its branches are used to make flutes. The berries are used during the winter season to strengthen the immune system. It is a wonderful source of shelter and food for wildlife and birds.
